Is this urgent, or can it wait?
That depends on size, location and cause rather than on how alarming it looks. A small, dry, contained patch is a different situation from active growth following a recent flood or an ongoing leak that has not been fixed.
Can I handle this myself, or do I need a professional?
It depends mainly on size and location, not on how confident you feel. Small, easily accessible, surface-level patches are commonly handled without a professional; large areas, HVAC involvement, or anything recurring after cleaning are typically where guidance points toward hiring a company.
